Abide With Us
Flipping the switch and leaning in close, I heard the familiar clicking sound. Bringing my face inches from the glass, I watched the ignition spark dance around in anticipation of the pilot flame.
“O holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray”
A minute passed, and the spark gave up, but I wasn’t ready to concede. I tried the switch two more times. Each time with the same result. Through investigation, I discovered that the propane tank was completely depleted.
“cast out our sin and enter in;
be born in us today”
At that moment, I couldn’t help but wonder: How often are we that little ignition spark? We expend so much energy trying to accomplish the task, unaware that our tank is depleted.
“We hear the Christmas angels,
the great glad tidings tell”
The sweet sound of my favorite Christmas song playing in the background penetrated my thoughts, and I suddenly felt renewed.
“O come to us, abide with us,
our Lord Emmanuel!”
I stood in humble worship, praising God for His promise to us. “I am the vine, and you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (NKJV)
