DEVOTION
When Hurricane Isabel wreaked havoc along the East Coast in 2003, I implored my husband to board up the windows on our house. We moved to the Eastern Shore less than three months prior from New York State, so I had no idea what a hurricane could do in our new home state. Reluctantly, he did so. "It'll be okay; I prayed over the house while boarding it up," he said later. "Will you trust Him?" he asked me. Yes; I prayed and believed we'd be safe.
Isobel arrived that night. The winds blew fiercely. Following our nightly prayer time with the family, my husband and I braced for the storm. One by one, our children sought solace in the safety of our room. Our toddler's cries sent me to her room to scoop her up and then lay her in between her father and me. Next, our four-year-old burst into the room. He leapt upon the bed, and searched for a spot between his sister and me. Finally, the 11-year-old hovered in the doorway to our bedroom. "Do you want to get in with us, honey?" I asked. He shook his head in the affirmative, and jumped in with the rest of the children.
Twenty-one years have passed. Needless to say, we survived that storm. Those three children have all moved out to make lives of their own. Our final child was added to the family two years following Isobel. We have encountered our fair share of storms – physical, and spiritual – but we can take heart in the knowledge that "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.'"
