It’s Day 12 of the Gratitude for Every Day 30-Day Devotion.

DEVOTION

Let my heart be ruled by the peace of Christ. The words flow off the tongue pretty easily but applying them and living as someone ruled by peace isn’t as simple. After all, there’s my to-do lists, for both for home and work. Phone calls I need to return. Medicine to pick up from the pharmacy. And the package that has to be mailed today to arrive on time.

Your day may run differently than mine, but I daresay it can be easy to get caught up in the frenzy of phone calls, appointments, errands to run, and deadlines to meet.

Frenzy and peace cannot co-exist.

How then do we let peace rule?

The very next part of the verse tells us, And be thankful.

Thankfulness and peace can co-exist.

When I am ill at ease or feeling chaotic it’s the perfect time to take a step back and count my blessings: a car that runs, a husband who loves me, a church that teaches the Bible, a co-worker who brought me a cup of coffee. You get the idea. Thankfulness begets peace.

The Apostle Paul continues to encourage us to develop habits of peace and gratitude by letting God’s word dwell richly in us. Not just listen to it on Sunday morning, but dwell, abide, and let it penetrate our hearts and become our source for peace and gratitude.

VERSE

Colossians 3:15-16 (ESV: English Standard Version)
